In its December, 1995 issue, Scientific American echoed the fragmentation theme predicted by the Zetas. The article states that as "Hale-Bopp is sputtering gas and dribbling debris into a pinwheel-shaped coma more voluminous than the sun," that it may "fizzle into a barely visible fuzzball." Quoting Daniel Green of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and Robert Burnham, the editor of Astronomy magazine, the Scientific American article concluded that the jury is out on whether "Hale-Bopp is as giant a comet as it appears or is simply burning out early."
