Trial 1: Pan Fried Pancake

Approximately 100 earthworms and red worms of all sizes (mostly small) were secured fresh from outdoors. They were purged for an hour in ice water, but did not empty their intestines completely (dark matter was still visible in the worms as they writhed about at the bottom of the ice water pan). Ichi tried an additional cleansing method, chopping the worms into small pieces and rinsing them repeatedly, squeezing and kneading the worm mash in a strainer. Additional dirt and blood (the water was pink) was rinsed out.

The worm pieces were mixed with chopped green onion (scallion) and thin slices of an onion, and fried without oil in a pan. No salt or spices beyond the onions were used.

Results: the resulting pancake had the appearance of browned pancake with onion slices visible and an occasional small worm outline visible.

Taste Tester 1 (Nancy) found that upon eating, the worm outline browned on the outside of the pancake was distressing and the pancake was too chewy. There was no taste, outside of a faint taste of onion.

Taste Tester 2 (Kurt) found the pancake sample too bland.

Taste Tester 3 (Ichi) found the sample tasteless, but the chewy nature was acceptable to a Japanese person (used to squid, etc.)
