Egyptian Relics in Australia
By Paul White, extract from Exposure Magazine
Vol 2 No.6, 1996, printed in Australia.
- There is approx 2 hrs drive North of Sydney a rocky outcrop that contains c. 250 Egyptian hieroglyphics, etched into 2
opposing wall surfaces.
- The photographs of some of these glyphs are here.
- The carvings have apparently been part of the local folklore of the area for nearly a century with reports of people
who sighted them as far back as the early 1900's.
- The Egyptologist Ray Johnson, a translator for the Museum of Antiquities in Cairo has translated what is described as
an Archaic, and until recently, little known and early dynastic style, from the 3rd Dynasty, as described in the Article.
The hieroglyphic writing is in the most ancient style of the Egyptians, with many of the glyphs and pictograms bearing
a striking resemblance to early Phoenician and Sumerian forms.
- There are other sites in Australia; Gympy and Cairns boast artifacts discovered in 1910; small stone Egyptian scarabs
inscribed with hieroglyphs
- A hand made glass amulet, in a stretched pyramid shape with Egyptian characters on the four sides, was found outside
the northern NSW town of Kyogle in 1983. It was dated by the Department of Mines at 5,000 years old.
